Just call me Deletraz

Now I know how F1 backmarkers feel being lapped every 15 laps - I have a lot to learn! I'll put up a report on my day's track meandering tomorrow as I'm a bit shattered and I have to work first thing in the morning (i.e in 6 hours) but in the meantime, here's my baby:

Nice one mate. I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now. You are about to do something I have dreamt of doing since I was about ten years old. I grew up about five miles away from the Knockhill Circuit and used to sneak in there as a Kid to watch Cleland race in the BTCC ( I was too broke to cough up the entry money, lol ) . I wish you all the best for this season. Hopefully one day, I will join you on the grid of the Legends series.

They look really fun cars to drive, what is the top speed compared to the XR cars at Knockhill?

Good Luck

Does your experience playing Sim games online help in any way while driving the car? I think lfs or one of the others has a Knockhill circuit choice.

The car looks like it slides a fair bit in the corners, is this accurate or is it purely a novice Sky Sports armchair viewer observation :-)

thanks

To Anonymous 1 - Thanks! I'm from the same background as you then... the frist time I came to Knockhill was indeed to see Cleland and Co in the BTCC... was bitten by the bug then and have had the aspirations to try racing myself for a couple of years - just never had the money for it.

In terms of top speed I believe the quick guys get up to around 120mph at the end of the main straight. The XR2s I'm not so sure about, but I know it's a good bit less in a straight line (I think).

They are great fun to drive, but probably one of the harder things to be a novice driver in! Four different people said to me at the test session "If you can learn to drive a legend then you can learn to drive anything" so if nothing else maybe it'll make me a better driver all round!

To Anonymous 2 - Sim Racing gives you a useful grounding in giving your opponents room, knowing to keep an eye on your mirrors and in general showing your opponents respect and hopefully getting it back as well. A lot of people put it down and say that playing games is nothing like the real thing but while I'll agree that obviously the actual process of driving a racing car for real is very different to a virtual one, driving in proper leagues with the same people as you would do in real life teaches you the basics of give and take on track.

There were three drivers who were quite some way off the pace on the test day yesterday (me and two people in cars which I don't think are running the SMRC series) and while I heard complaints about those two I've been told I did ok at keeping my wits about me and staying out of the way of the faster guys for the most part.

And yeah, they slide a lot - that's part of the reason I was slow - the fast guys drift them through the corners as with no downforce it doesn't really slow you down to do that - I haven't got nearly enough confidence for that yet!

Ok, cool thanks for the reply. I wouldn't worry too much about being a bit off the pace, you will get faster as the season goes on, even the top F1 guys were probably a bit unsure when they first started. It is early days .
